Renoir's mind changes along with that of the older turtles.

Mutant Ninja Turtles Gaiden is a TMNT (Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles) fan comic/manga that I have created with a very specific objective: create deep character development. My fan comic's universe is more or less a mix between the Mirage universe and the new (2003) TMNT cartoon. While it takes in account some of the events and facts from the old Volume 1 Mirage comics, a very important incident takes place, which leads each turtle to live a totally different life compared to the official Mirage comics. This explains the inclusion of the word "GAIDEN" in the title, meaning "sidestory" in Japanese and the omission of the word "Teenage" in TMNT as an indication that the story takes place when the four turtles are adults.
This story is a universe on its own, and doesn't fit in any official TMNT storyline because of the events that take place in it, but will have similarities and references to them.

I have created a Prologue, which happens when the turtles are still teenagers. It sets the scene for the main story, as it tells of an incident that forever changed their lives. The rest of the story takes place when the turtles are in their mid-thirties.

Most TMNT fans remember the green guys as pizza eating surfing young turtles, for the 80's cartoon of TMNT was the most popular universe of TMNT. Actually, TMNT was originally a comic book in black and white which was geared towards teens. It is mostly on that universe that I'm loosely building that of MNT Gaiden.

I also use some elements from the Image universe of the TMNTs quite early in the story. For example, Shadow, Casey's adoptive daughter, will have a major role in the story, or Raph's little 'eyeball problem'.
However, elements that destroy the image of characters in the Image comics in my opinion are not considered, like Casey being a drunkard with serious issues.

Last but not least, I introduce in this side story a fifth turtle called Renoir, who is the teen and the newbie of the gang. He is a turtle with dark yellow headband and pale green skin.
His true identity is shrowded in mystery, as he claims to have been a human as well, contradicting the circumstances surrounding his appearance.
While the older TMNT were named after Renaissance artist, Renoir is named after one from the nineteenth century to indicate the generation gap between him and the older turtles.
Renoir is used not only as a comic relief, but also as an witness to the conflicts between the older turtles. Originally self-centered and extremely reluctant to have anything to do with the older turtles, Renoir learns from the older turtles' conflicts and changes for the better or for the worse.

Obscure Zodiac and all related comics/creations are created by Hoang-Quan Pham "Tigerfog" 2004-2010.
